A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” stated the country's president.
The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This project was closely associated with his administration's strategic goals for the southeastern region.
Another massive rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The building of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a significant expansion of its duties in public works. They were completed at an rapid pace, beating forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked persistent apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition urged an immediate halt in the building and running of all similar projects.
This pause was proposed until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "demands swift accountability."
In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and running of these vital undertakings.
