The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
