RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French warplanes in a coordinated attack on an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK's MoD.
The facility, located using surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was positioned in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.
"Our fighter planes employed Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a number of access tunnels providing entry to the facility... preliminary assessments indicate the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.
There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned safely, the MoD added.
The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.
Daesh - referred to as Daesh - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.
"This action demonstrates British leadership, and determination to work closely with our partners, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary remarked.
RAF aircraft have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of the group following its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.
"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces who took part in this strike for their expertise and their bravery," Healey commented. "They were part of numerous UK service members stationed over the holidays. This mission, to remove terrorist threats who endanger our security, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security at home and powerful internationally."
During December, the US military carried out what it described as a "massive strike" on IS targets in the country, following an assault claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.
The U.N. estimates Daesh still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Syria and Iraq.
